A WOMAN’S MOTHER NEGLECTED IN A NURSING HOME FACILITY

On March 22, 2007, an 80-year-old woman was admitted to a rehabilitation center after receiving hospital care, which determined she would not need to undergo back surgery. The woman’s past medical history stated the woman suffered from the following conditions:

  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Hypertension
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Chronic lower back pains
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Heart murmur
  • Macular degeneration

On March 26, the woman’s daughter visited her at the rehab center. She found that her mother had been sitting in a wheelchair for more than 9 hours and was wet from urinating and crying. The next day, the daughter returned only to find her mother in the same condition.

Three days later, the daughter visited her mother again and removed the woman’s pants to allow her to use the bedpan. At this point, the daughter noticed her mother had a large sore on her tailbone. She immediately reported it to the nursing home staff.

The next month, the daughter noticed more large sores on her mother. That same day, a doctor examined the woman and found the woman was suffering numerous, severe health issues. The woman died on April 25, 2007.

How Common is Nursing Home Abuse?

Sadly, nursing home and rehabilitation center abuse is common. In fact, the National Center on Elder Abuse reports that in 2010, over 50% of nursing home staff members admitted to mistreating elder patients by participating in one or more of the following activities:

  • Physical Violence
  • Mental abuse
  • Neglect
