On Monday, November 9, a court in Pennsylvania ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $1.75 million for failing to properly warn doctors and patients of the risk of breast growth in boys and men associated with the drug Risperdal. This was one of four lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson in the past year making similar allegations.
This case was brought by the family of Nicholas Murray, an autistic boy living in Maryland who developed symptoms of gynecomastia as a result of taking Risperdal. The suit alleged that the drug company failed to disclose that the risk to patients was much greater than the one in 1,000 chance of male breast growth they initially reported.
A previous verdict ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $2.5 million in damages. Johnson & Johnson’s lawyer contends that the company has acted responsibly and that it spent years testing and studying the drug for potential side effects and risks. Many side effect victims, their families, and their attorneys beg to differ; there are currently thousands of pending cases throughout the United States alleging that the company was irresponsible with regards to disclosure of Risperdal’s side effects.
