Smartphones, infotainment systems, and other internet-enabled technologies are constantly vying for our attention—even when we are behind the wheel. Distracted driving, therefore, continues to cause serious injuries in the United States.

To draw attention to the issue, Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has partnered with AAA and various other organizations to promote April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

According to Col. Gene Spaulding, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, “Driving distracted, even for a moment, can lead to a catastrophe. FHP wants to remind drivers to take the proper steps to eliminate these types of crashes and for everyone to be more focused on driving.”

The three main types of driver distractions:

  • Take your mind off driving (cognitive distractions)
  • Require you to look away from the road ahead (visual distractions)
  • Result in you removing your hands from the wheel (manual distractions)

Examples of driver distractions that many people deal with on a regular basis include:

  • Texting
  • Reaching for objects in the car
  • Unsecured pets
  • Grooming
  • Applying makeup
  • Adjusting the radio
  • Smoking
  • Looking at scenery
  • Thinking about work or personal issues

Distracted driving accidents continue to take place despite safety initiatives like Florida’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month and laws limiting the ways that allow drivers to use electronic devices while behind the wheel. Victims, however, are typically entitled to compensation for the losses they experience as a result of an accident caused by distracted drivers.

Injured by a Distracted Driver? Talk to a Tampa Car Accident Lawyer as Soon as You Can

If a distracted driver injured you, protect your legal rights. After you seek medical attention and doctors stabilize your condition, contact an attorney—even if the other driver (or the driver’s insurance company) admits fault. Without the assistance of an attorney, most people do not know how to calculate the full worth of their cases—how to add up the entire cost of their injuries. Without knowing the value of your case, you may accept a settlement offer for far less than the amount that you should receive. A personal injury lawyer who represents you will negotiate with the insurance company for you and ensure that you get the compensation to which Florida law entitles you.
