Four Types Of Valentine’s Day Injuries & How To Avoid Them
Happy Valentine’s Day from The Florida Law Group! Valentine’s Day isn’t traditionally thought of as one of the more dangerous holidays – we typically associate New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, or the 4th of July/Memorial Day with more injuries and fatalities. However, Valentine’s Day carries its own unique risks, and because this Valentine’s Day falls directly after Super Bowl Sunday this year, there are some things to watch out for if you’re celebrating your love tonight!
Drunk Driving Accidents
Champagne, wine, and cocktails are a timeless Valentine’s Day tradition. Alcohol is not dangerous in and of itself if consumed wisely. The problems come when couples are either (a) out for dinner and decide to get behind the wheel to drive home before they are completely sober, or (b) at home thinking they are safe by consuming more since they are not driving, but actually consume too much and poison their systems or make themselves susceptible to a fall.
Whether you’re going out or staying in, have a plan for your alcohol consumption. If you’re going out to eat, and plan on drinking, consider Ubering, and make sure you are sober beore you drive! There’s no excuse for driving tipsy, buzzed, or drunk. You could seriously injure or kill someone else, and you are also at a risk for being injured or killed. If you’re sober, keep an eye out for other drivers who are not on the roads with you – look for erratic behavior and call law enforcement if you suspect drunk driving.
Drowsy Driving Accidents
Valentine’s Day is on a Monday; most adults are likely to be tired after the end of a workday, and even more so because they stayed up to watch the Super Bowl or attend a Super Bowl party last night. While the game ended relatively early as far as most games go, there are probably a lot of yawning couples who are trying to still celebrate out tonight, and that can be dangerous for everyone on the road. Every Valentine’s Day is in winter, which means it gets darker earlier no matter where in Florida you live, and that can make you feel even more tired!
If you’re tired, consider staying in or drinking coffee before heading out. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t drive drowsy, as you could doze off at the wheel and cause a major accident. If you’re wide awake, look out for other drivers on the road who may be drifting off to the side or don’t have their lights on; steer clear of them, honk your horn, and contact law enforcement if you suspect someone is driving fatigued.
Candle Fires
Candles – another classic Valentine’s day tradition that can be dangerous. If you’re trying to spark romance by lighting candles at home, make sure that they’re not placed near anything flammable – flowers, curtains, walls, or anything else that could heat up and cause a house fire. Don’t go to sleep with candles on, or leave them burning to leave the house even for a short period of time. Just exercise caution or consider using LED candles that flicker but produce no heat as a safer alternative.
Cooking Injuries
If you’re trying to cook a romantic dinner at home, follow basic kitchen safety rules! Use sharp knives carefully (dull ones are more likely to slip and cut your hand). Turn off appliances before eating. Turn pot handles inward so you don’t accidentally knock over boiling water or food. Cook meat fully to avoid food poisoning.
